F.A.Q.s frequently asked questions
--Can chemicals be stripped from hair to go natural?
No. In my years as a stylist, I have never discovered a way to remove chemicals from a client's hair. Once the hair has been relaxed, the texture has been
altered on a permanent basis, thus the name "perm." If it was only temporary it would be called a "temp." (smile)
--Can relaxed hair be locked (as in dreadlocks)?
This question has a complex answer: yes and no. With traditional locking techniques, the relaxed hair can be back-combed or teased into a lock form but it will never truly lock like natural or unprocessed hair will. The relaxed or chemically treated ends will eventually need to be trimmed. The Sisterlocks technique is also an alternative for those who want locks but don't want to cut all their hair. --What is natural hair?
Hair that is totally free of chemicals, i.e. relaxers, texturizers. Natural hair is how God intended your hair to be! (smile)
--Can you wash your hair if you have locks?
YES! There is a BIG misconception that locked hair cannot be shampooed. That is totally false. I believe in healthy and clean hair. My locked client's hair is always thoroughly shampooed. Locked hair is probably cleaner than relaxed hair in some instances because there aren't a lot of styling products built in the hair. I believe this myth comes from people thinking that when they are in the beginning stages of locking they don't want to disturb the twists so they have to wash them very gently. Somewhere along the way someone interpreted that to mean don't wash.
--How long does it take for hair to lock?
Anywhere from 6 months to a year or longer. If you have a tight curl pattern, your hair will lock faster than someone with a looser or straighter hair texture. The best thing to do is relax (no pun intended!) and be patient. There is no quick fix to the process. So no glue, beeswax, or string!
